Justin Whyte - 30th July

Justin Whyte returns to Laika after a couple of trips to Egypt, a long stint at Sotano, Hilton Southwarf, twelve months writing and producing in the Northern Rivers NSW near Byron and a new solo album due out at the end of the year.  This multi-instrumentalist musical chameleon is predictably unpredictable. Think New York jazz piano bar meets intimate European club/cosy lounge room that then transforms into a pumping New York Night/House club depending on the night, stopping off in Vegas, Cuba and New Orleans along the way. The energy of the room at its peak is buzzing electric. Connecting people through music and making sure people have fun is his thing. You’ll hear Buble, Sinatra, Jobim, Chet Baker, Bill Withers, Stevie Wonder, Barry White, Bobby Darin, John Legend, Elton John, Billy Joel, Thelonius Monk, Ray Barretto, Michael McDonald, Bill Evans, George Benson, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, just to name a few and for all you salsa dancers, don’t get him started. After a large chunk of his career spent as a salsa pianist in Melbourne’s premier salsa bands if you request a salsa number he may not stop. With the smoky velvet voice, mad piano skills and phrasing that is impossible to pin down, you may be locked into an intimate Chet Baker ballad one minute and dancing to Earth Wind and Fire the next depending on the night or the mood as he delves into a vast repertoire of styles and genres from his musical travels. Drawing from his extensive experience in Jazz, Blues, House, Latin Jazz, Salsa, Funk, ambient and time honored classics, Justin very much enjoys doing the smoky jazz thing or whipping his audiences into a frenzy with a classic disco thumper. Either way Justin loves to set different moods and you may feel like you’re in another place in another time…Don’t miss this amazing artist at Laika
